She graduated cum laude from the University of Natal Medical School, South Africa in 2000, whence she was awarded amongst several Deans Commendations, the EB Adams prize for the best student in the final examination in Medicine and the YK Seedat prize for outstanding achievement in her final year.

After completion of her Medical Degree, she worked in London, United Kingdom in the field of Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the experience of which equipped her with a profound understanding of the psychosocial impact of skin diseases and motivated her proclivity for skin and Women’s Health. It also inspired her research topic, and she went on to graduate with a Master of Medical Science Degree in Dermatology, on the Quality of Life of patients with HIV associated Kaposi Sarcoma in 2007.

Dr Hoosen successfully completed her Fellowship in Dermatology in South Africa in May 2009, through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and acquired her surgical skills training through the Global Health Dermatologic Surgery Training Program sponsored by Columbia University, Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Blade and Light International, and the University of Kwazulu-Natal.

In addition to being highly revered by her peers for her specialist expertise, she was solicited by the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, as a Research Supervisor, Honorary Lecturer and Examiner and by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa as a Lecturer and Examiner in the Dermatology specialist exams. As a member of the Expert Committee, she contributed to devising therapeutic protocols and guidelines for the Department of Dermatology and formulating the core syllabus for undergraduates. In her pursuit to expand and decentralize specialist skin care whilst simultaneously educating and empowering doctors and nurses in rural hospitals, Dr Hoosen was instrumental in establishing tele-dermatology and in initiating ‘flying doctor’ services.

Dr Hoosen is a general dermatologist with special interest in Women’s Health and Medical Dermatology, in particular: acne, eczema, psoriasis, autoimmune bullous diseases, connective tissue diseases and tropical dermatoses. Her commitment to her patients, academia and research ensures that she keeps up to date with cutting edge technology in dermatology.
